True scholarship begins and ends with a true attitude toward
life. Since its foundation in 1914, SKHU has endeavored to cultivate
a new type of human, one who can live together with others by
realizing spirits of openness, sharing, and service, the university
motto. This new type of human exceeds a lonely leader who, absorbed
in his sense of superiority, excludes and ignores other humans.
The above-mentioned university motto is indeed not only a good
maxim to hear, but an important practical value everyone should
pursue.
All
human thoughts and deep-hearted actions play their proper roles
when they are wide open, and all property, knowledge, and talents
demonstrate their full potentialities when they are shared.
The essence of true scholarship lies in true humanity that respects
even the smallest and the least, and is willing to serve others.
I believe, this is no other than the true spirit of human beings,
as well as the essential value of what a true scholar should
be.
The education and scholarship of our university has taken new
challenges which other universities dare not take. The university
of human rights and peace, the university of social welfare
and social service, the university of specialized NGO programs
and its educational reflection on civil society,
these are the most representative slogans of the new challenges
we boldly tackle.
There is no university, domestically or abroad, that has established
a systematic curriculum on NGO studies, except SungKongHoe University.
As the pioneer educational institute that emphasizes the role
of the third sector including NGOs, NPOs, and other civil organizations
in the future, in supervising and counterchecking both the first
sector, i.e., the government, and the second sector, i.e., the
market and the business entrepreneurs, SKHU has made initiative
efforts to cultivate NGO leadership, by providing students with
a systematic construction of the philosophy, activities, and
prospects of civil society organizations. Such efforts by the
university were recognized by the Ministry of Education and
Human Resources as "An Outstanding University in Educational
Reform" and was selected as the primal institution that
won several hundred thousand dollars of financial support from
the government.
Another
challenge is met by the university's effort to establish a special
organization of the curriculum, "IT(Information Technology)
Overseas Education," aiming at cultivation of up-to-date
knowledge and skills in information technology. This so-called
'India Windows IT Program' provides students with opportunities
to immerse, for one year, in an intensive training course in
Information Technology in India, a country with first-rate skills
and accumulated knowledge in this field. This original program
has drawn special attention from press and mass communication,
other universities, and, especially, the Ministry of Information
& Communication, and has been recognized and referred to
as 'an ideal model of its kind' others should follow, not to
mention getting financial support from the government.
These examples are but two among many that incorporate the new
challenges our university has taken. They, above all, demonstrate
the vision of our university that, based on accurate knowledge
of the necessities of our society, pursues future-oriented activities
and so maintains a progressive
philosophy by going forward to the future.
SungKongHoe University is willing to be your partner, if you
have dreams for a brighter future in which human rights and
peace is fully guaranteed, and people together can 'make a forest'
which provides safe shelters for the birds and ensures the security
and growth of individual trees. Please come and join with us
in our new challenges. Welcome, all of you, to our university!
